Galaxie Festival de Musique Emergente, Rouyn-Noranda QC, August 31
Published Sep 01, 2018Galaxie do one thing, but they do it pretty well: the electro-rock project helmed by Olivier Langevin crafts upbeat, danceable rock with plenty of theatrics. Langevin sauntered onstage clad in a sparkling red and gold cloak along with his five bandmates (of which only some were also costumed — did somebody miss an e-mail or something?) and launched into a series of beefy, fuzz-laden dance-rock tunes.
Visually, the performance was impressive — watching the three percussionists move between their many kits was always loads of fun, and Langevin's swagger was compelling to watch. But while the music featured plenty of big riffs and danceable grooves, it all began to feel very one-note very quickly. Songs began to blur into a giant glob of maximalist psychedelia and macho rock theatrics, including their cover of David Bowie's "Fame." It was best to just shut your brain off and dance along.
